Competency-Based Mathematics Program: Transferring Credit

Truman Course Grade:

Each student’s grade in Competency-Based Mathematics will be an average of their highest examination scores for each test on the software.

If a student fails to complete one or more of the assigned tests and does not withdraw from the class, they will receive a grade of F on their Truman transcript.

Grading Scale for Truman Grades:

A = At least 90%
B = At least 80%
C = At least 70% (Grades lower than a C are considered “non-passing” in this program.)
F = Below 70%

Checking Truman Course Grades:

Competency-Based Mathematics students can view the grade they received by logging in to Truview, selecting Student” under “Tools”, and clicking the “Courses & Grades Tool.” From there, they will click on “Final Grades.”

How to view grades in TruView

High School Course Grade (if applicable):

If students are enrolled in an associated high school class (Model 1), high school grades are assigned by the high school teachers at their discretion.

What a Grade of “NS” Means:

Since most high school classes do not conform to the schedule of a normal college semester, grade entry may be required for Truman students before your semester has ended.  Thus, Truman will record a grade of NS (not submitted) until the point at which the student’s final grade is submitted.

Truman Grade Point Average:

Grades earned in Competency-Based Mathematics courses will affect the university GPA of students who later choose to attend Truman.

Transcripts:

Each student that signs up for a Competency-Based Mathematics course will have a Truman transcript that lists the course they signed up for and the grade they earned — just like a regular Truman student.

Unofficial Transcripts: Students can view and print their unofficial transcripts by logging in to TruView, selecting the Student tab, and clicking the “View Transcripts” link in the “Student Data” box under the “Courses & Grades” heading.

Official Transcripts: Students can request their official Truman transcript to be sent to them or to a third party (such as a college or university to which they wish to apply) by visiting the Registrar’s transcript request page.

Note: Students who have not paid their account balance in full will have a hold placed on their account that will prevent them from being able to send their transcript until their balance is paid.

Transferring Truman Credit:

Students who complete a Competency-Based Mathematics Course with a grade of C or higher can transfer the credit to any school that accepts Truman State University credit.

To determine whether or not a certain school will accept transfer credit for these courses contact the registrar’s office at the school and provide them with the course description (see below).  All colleges and universities in the State of Missouri that participate in “Core 42” must accept this credit.

To transfer credit to another school, students should first contact the school’s registrar’s office to determine to what address they must send their official transcript and what process the school requires students to complete in order to submit credit for transfer (they may require students to fill out forms, meet with an advisor, etc.).

Course Descriptions

MATH 156 College Algebra

A review and study of algebraic topics including equations and inequalities, algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities. Emphasis is placed on application and review of skills. A student who has earned credit for a higher-level mathematics class may not enroll in MATH 156 without permission from the Mathematics Department. Credit Hours: 3

MATH 157 Plane Trigonometry

The essentials of trigonometry with some applications. Practical skills, problem solving and computational skills are emphasized. A student who has earned credit for a higher-level mathematics class may not enroll in MATH 157 without permission from the Mathematics Department.  Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in MATH 156 – College Algebra (or the equivalent).  Credit Hours: 2

MATH 186 Precalculus

A study of the fundamental concept of a function with emphasis on algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Provides basic algebra skills as well as experience with mathematical reasoning in a variety of applications that demonstrate the prevalence of elementary functions in the world around us. Prepares students for more advanced mathematics courses such as Basic Statistics, calculus, and other mathematical mode of inquiry courses. A student who has earned credit for a higher-level mathematics class may not enroll in MATH 186 without permission from the Mathematics Department.  Credit Hours: 3

How Transferred Credits Could Affect Students’ Grade Point Averages at Other Colleges or Universities:

A student’s Truman course grades may or may not be included in their GPA at another college or university when transferred depending on the school’s transfer policies.

Students should contact the Registrar’s office of the college or university to which they are interested in transferring the credit to see what the school’s policies are regarding transfer credit.
